She was born June 15, 1918, in Oldtown, Ky., to Linzie Elwood and Nancy Creech Pennington, the fifth of six girls. She moved to Greenup with her family at the age of 6 and called it home for the rest of her life.
Mrs. Hardymon graduated from Greenup High School in 1937. She was employed by Leslie's Drug Store in Greenup for many years prior to her retirement in 1980. It was there she met the love of her life, Artty Hardymon. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Greenup for 70 years, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and fulfilled many other duties. She was a 50-plus-year member of Electra Chapter 3, Order of Eastern Star and the Greenup Homemakers Club.
Marie exhibited the true spirit of volunteerism. She could always be counted upon to work for a good cause and volunteered for the March of Dimes, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society and American Lung Association, to name only a few. She was an avid sports fan and was known to settle in with Artty for a hot dog and Coke to listen to or watch Cincinnati Reds games. Her deepest loyalty was her Kentucky Wildcats and she witnessed all seven NCAA basketball titles during her life in the Bluegrass State.
Marie was also preceded in death by four sisters, Virgie Sturgill, Mae Porter Fellows, Norma Jean Darnell and Bess Griffith.
She is also survived by her husband of 63 years, Artty Hardymon of Greenup; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Rob Poynor of Gainesville Fla.; a grandson, Christopher Hardymon Poynor and his wife, Sara, of Iowa City, Iowa; a sister, Ruby Burkhardt of Albuquerque, N.M.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her presence on Main Street in Greenup will be sorely missed, not just by her family, but by all who knew her and her outgoing spirit, generous heart and quick wit.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Dr. Tom Melvin. Burial will be in Brick Union Cemetery in Lloyd, Ky.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and an hour before services Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions to honor Marie may be sent to the March of Dimes, 1831 NW 13th St., Suite 3, Gainesville, FL 32609.
