Mr. J. Allen Little died last evening at 8:30 o'clock at his home on Louise avenue, Belmont [neighborhood], after a period of declining health extending over several months. The deceased was 77 years of age and had been a resident of the county for many years. he removed from Sharon township to the city about a year ago and has been living here with his family ever since. He was born in Stanly [county] and lived there [incorrect -- lived in Clear Creek Community of Mecklenburg County, NC] until the outbreak of the civil war. He enlisted at the outbreak of hostilities [enlisted Aug. 10th, 1861 per his military service record] and served gallantly throughout the war in Captain Harris' company. In August 1865, he was married to Miss Parmilla Crowell of Union county and lived in Union county for a number of years.
Mr. Little was a life-long and consistent member of the Methodist church and was a highly respected and esteemed citizen. The funeral services will be conducted at the late residence this afternoon at 2 o'clock by [R]ev L. A Falls, pastor of Belmont Methodist church and the interment will be in the cemetery of Hickory Grove Methodist church. Mecklenburg County Camp of Confederate Veterans, of which Mr. Little was a member, will probably attend the funeral in a body.
Mr. Little is survived by his wife and nine children: Messrs. W. B., L.L., D.A., J.H. and H.R.[Reese] Little; Mesdames Adam Thompson, W.M. Davis, R.H. [Ada Jane] Allen and Miss Hallie [Hattie] Little.
