Born Aug. 4, 1924, in St. Joseph, Mo., to Isaac Franklin and Grace May Gray Breit, he married Adelle M. Venditti on Sept. 10, 1946, in Philadelphia. She died March 28, 1981, in Pekin.
He later married Katherine M. Temple Gray on May 28, 1983, in Pekin. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Vincent Breit of Yuma, Ariz., and William Hickey of San Diego; two stepsons, Larry (and Avis) Gray of Prescott, Ariz., and Leonard Jr. (and Marcia) Gray of Pekin; one stepdaughter, Joyce (and Wayne) Baker of Creve Coeur; six grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; many great-grandchildren; 22 stepgreat-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Donald (and Rose) of Anaheim, Calif.
He also was preceded in death by one stepson, Richard; and one sister.
A World War II and Korean War Navy veteran, he retired with 20 years of service as a chief engineer aboard submarines and also as a recruiter. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star. He was a member of Roy L. King Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1232.
After the service, he was self-employed, and he and his first wife operated a laundromat and dress shop. He last worked as a supervisor for Midwest Grain Products for many years, where he was an electrician, first in Atchison, Kan., and then in Pekin.
He attended First Church of the Nazarene in Pekin and helped build the congregation's new sanctuary building. He was a member of Christian Church in St. Joseph, Mo.
Graveside services will be in Savannah City Cemetery in Savannah, Mo., where military honors will be accorded.
