James Heaton was born 30 May 1752 in Swanzey, Cheshire, New Hampshire; the son of James Heaton and Abigail Rice. He married Freedom Rider 13 August 1778 in Shelburne, Franklin, Massachusetts and joined the church there in 1779. He and his family moved to Waitsfield, Vermont in 1793 where he owned a large farm in the northwest corner of town. He was a Selectman there from 1794-1798. At some time after 1798 he and his family moved to Jefferson County, New York. James died while travelling through Manheim, New York in August 1821 and is buried in Hillside Cemetery, Antwerp, Jefferson, New York. He is listed as a Revolutionary War veteran on his tombstone.
