Benjamin K. Stevenson. On October 3, 2010 ,Ben passed peacefully from this life to a place prepared for him by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, receiving his crown of righteousness for fighting the good fight and finishing the course. Since April, he has called Avante his home and the entire family came to cherish the care & love he received there. His last hours were spent surrounded by family members and the vigilant ministrations of caregivers from Hospice of Citrus County.
Born in New Castle, PA, to Irwin and Florence (McGee) Stevenson, he grew up on a family farm, the third of four brothers. In 1939, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, heeding the call of Uncle Sam's "I Want You!" finger-pointing poster. While stationed at McDill Air Force Base, he met Ethel Glover, his wife to be, while attending church services. After a short courtship, they were married June 15, 1942, just before Ben was called to England where he served as navigator/communications officer on B-17 Bombers. He returned home to work 3 years for Penn Power, then re-enlisted in 1949 serving until retirement in 1965 when he retired to Floral City, FL. He was employed 13 years for the Florida State Prison System in Bushnell and Vero Beach, FL; his final job, the one he said himself was "the best job I ever had" was his ten years with Brannen Banks as a Courier, where he retired one last time in 1992. Ben was very active in the Lord's Church serving as Deacon for the Church of Christ in Anchorage, AK, and Vero Beach, FL. He was an Elder for 3 years at the Istachatta Church of Christ, of which he was a current member. Ask anyone who knew Ben and they would confirm his friendly, outgoing, pleasant, likeable personality, always ready to help anyone in need of help in any number of different ways doing something productive. Ben dearly loved his God and his family. He was an active bowler and shuffleboarder in both Inverness and Floral City clubs and a patriotic supporter.
Ben was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Floyd of New Castle, PA, brother Glenn of Racine, WI; and beloved granddaughter Christina Peschard, Floral City. He is survived by Ethel, his wife of 68 years; his oldest brother, Robert, Washington. D.C.; and daughters Darlene LaFayette, Kathy Hughes and son-in-law Ken Hughes and son, Gary, all of Floral City; grandsons David Stevenson and wife Nancy of Ashburn, GA, Devin Stevenson and wife Krista of Homosassa and Joshua LaFayette of Floral City; great-grandsons Lee and Shane Stevenson of Ashburn, GA; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the staff of both Avante and Hospice of Citrus County for their professional attention to "our" Ben's needs.
Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at 6:00 P.M. at the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home with Mr. Gary Kimble of the Istachatta Church of Christ officiating. Interment will be at a later date at Hills of Rest Cemetery in Floral City. The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. until the hour of service.
