Professor Emeritus Mankato State University Harold (Hal) died unexpectedly on Oct. 1, 2010 at United Hospital in St. Paul. He was born Jan. 24, 1927 to Herbert and Alma Dreyer in Zim, MN. The family later moved near Bemidji. At age 15, Hal enlisted in the Navy and was discharged Dec. 1946. He, along with all the members of the USS Hancock, was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation ribbon for outstanding heroism. He received his B.S. from Bemidji State, then taught at Grand Marais and was activated in the National Guard for the Korean War. He received his MS and Ph.D at the U of MN. He taught at Mankato State Univ. until his retirement in 1989 and he was past president of the MN Reading Assoc. His many hobbies included duck carving, fishing, hunting, golfing, gardening, reading, traveling (he visited 39 countries), lapidary artistry, walking, music (from Pavarotti to Roy Orbisson) and art appreciation. He was married to Alethamae (Lee) Martin, with whom he had four children, and later divorced. He married Sharon Baker Washburn and was celebrating 28 years together. Hal was preceded in death by his parents, 7 brothers and 3 sisters. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; children, Brady (Dee), Cara Edwards (Mike), Jonathan (Lisa), Heidi Coffey (James); stepdaughter, Rebecca Washburn; grandchildren, Dawn, Erik, Aaron, Sara, Brendan, Jack, Annie, Hanna, Raena; siblings, Wayne (Roxanne), Dick (Karen), Kirt (Jan), Marge Morlan, Mary Prince (Shawn), Jeanie Trudeau (Dan) and Joanne Montbriand (Bob). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to the Am. , , or charity of your choice. Funeral services will be held on Oct. 6, 2010 at the Roberts Funeral & Cremation Chapel, 8108 Barbara Ave. IGH. The Memorial Service will be 11 a.m. with a visitation period from 10-11 a.m. Interment will take place at Greenwood Cemetery in Bemidji Oct. 7, 2010 at 3 p.m. 651-455-2035
