Charles served in the United States Marine Corps., during the Korean War and was a graduate of Staunton Military Academy and Duke University and spent his post-military engineering career at Pratt-Whitney. He was responsible for the design and testing of jet engines and specialty aircraft such as the cold-war innovative spy plane, the SR-71BlackBird.
Mr. Barnes is survived by his sons, Michael Haynes Barnes and David Dillon Barnes, his brother, James M. Barnes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dempsey Barnes and Dorothy Mary (Neagle) Barnes, his first wife, Lucy Carol (Bunting) Barnes and his second wife, Nancy (Beggs) Barnes.
