Postmark: Whon, Texas; March 10, 1905; 2 cent stamp

Heading: Whon, Texas; March “8” 1905; Miss Nollie Hill

Dear Schoolmate,
After some delay, I will with pleasure attempt answering your most highly appreciated letter which came to hand a few days back. Was glad to receive a letter from you. This leaves us all well...
Nollie, you asked me how we liked it here. We all are well satisfied. There is some awful good people out here. We all have good health, and we made a very good crop, made 16 bales of cotton and some corn and Milam maize.
A very sad accident happened here Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. McCain’s little baby was drown. They found it floating on the tank. The tank was close to the house. They supposed the little thing was trying to dip up water and accidently fell in. It was buried Monday evening. Its death was very sad indeed. It wasn’t quite two years old.
We have a store at Whon and expect to have a gin here before long, and there is talk of building a new church here. We have spelling at Whon every Friday night, had a show here last Friday night. We have singings and Sunday School every Sunday evening, church every third Sunday. I had a nice time Christmas. We had some fun dressing the tree Christmas Eve. I got several nice presents. New Year’s Day several of us young folks went to Rockwood to singing. We certainly had a nice time.
Well, Nollie, I will close for this time, by introducing you to my best friend, Miss Golda Ripley. She will write you a short letter. She is a mighty sweet girl. So no more this time.
Your best friend,
Maidie Forehand

[Peggy's 2020 note: Golda Ripley, age 16, later married a brother of Maidie Forehand, so the friendship probably became even closer.]
