According to his obituary he was born in Pana, Christian County, IL. He came to Kansas in March 1886 and located near Lost Springs in Marion County with Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Wilkerson, his older half-sister and their family, after two years they relocated to Edwards County on land claims near Lewis. January 16, 1890 he was united in marriage to Laura McChristy of Rosmond, IL. They built a home on the Lewis claim which was seven miles southeast of Lewis and resided there until 1904 when they moved into Lewis, KS.He was very civic minded, helping to establish the Lewis Cooperative Co., in 1902 and served as director or secretary for 27 years. Also an organizer of The Home State Bank in 1904 and was president of that institution until 1948. He served in the Kansas State Legislature for the Populist Party, District 93, House Chamber 1897, 1898 and District 92, House Chamber was re-elected 1933, 1935, and 1937.He was chosen through a county wide poll as Edwards County's most outstanding citizen. He served as City Treasurer and Councilman and was a member of the school board over thirty years.After the death of Laura Malin in 1937, he married Minnie C Curtis in 1939 and was survived by his wife, step-daughter, Mrs. Laird Hawley, and grandson Joel Hawley and stepson Arch Curtis, several nieces, and nephews.
