A Civil War veteran, John W. Beetem enlisted in Newville, Cumberland County, on July 19, 1862 and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg on August 23 as a private with Co. F, 13th Pennsylvania Cavalry (117th Volunteers). He was captured at the second battle of Winchester, June 15, 1863, incarcerated on Belle Isle in Richmond, Virginia, and paroled August 2, 1863. He returned to duty and was honorable discharged with his company on July 14, 1865.

In 1860, he was a farmer living with his family in Monroe Township, Cumberland County PA.

John married Martha L. Stough about 1874 and to this union were born 4 children - George 1875, Allen Lowrie 1877, John S. 1880, and Abraham C. 1883.
