Mrs. Mary Jane Moncrief, born in Evans County, Ga., on April 15, 1917, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, at the age of 90.

Her parents, Henry Allen Tippins and Duchess Alverda Rogers, raised their eight children in Claxton, Ga., where a surviving brother, Charles Tebeau Tippins, and his wife, Eunice, make their home. In 1941, Mary married Wallace B. Moncrief and spent the first 22 years of her married life as an Army wife before she and Wallace retired to Williamsburg, Va. Following the death of her husband in 1986, Mary continued to live in Williamsburg until 1997 when she moved to live with her youngest son, John Moncrief, and his wife, LaVerne, in King and Queen County. Here she watched the river, the enthusiasm of her great-grandchildren and enjoyed the visits of family.

An infant daughter and her husband of 45 years preceded Mary in death. In addition to her brother, she is survived by two sons and their wives, John and LaVerne Moncrief of King and Queen, Va., Wallace and Ann Moncrief of Morganton, N.C.; three grandchildren and spouses, Charles and Joyce Moncrief of West Point, Va., Matthew and Elizabeth Moncrief of Hickory, N.C., John and Claire Ervin of Durham, N.C.; three great-granddaughters, Katelyn and Lindsey Moncrief of West Point, Va., and Grace Ann Ervin of Durham, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary's life was shaped by a large and loving family. She was influenced by the Great Depression and seeing her husband go off to both WWII and the Korean War. She raised two boys right and was generous with her family. Greeting and meeting new people was never a problem for her. Her friends and family will miss her greatly.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Old Church United Methodist Church, Shanghai, Va.

Memorial donations may be made to Army Emergency Relief, Attn. Donations, 200 Stovall St., Room 5-N-13, Alexandria, VA 22332-0600.

Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th St., West Point, Va., is handling arrangements.
