Bauwens took his solemn vows on August 15, 1955 and was ordained to the priesthood on February 25 of the following year.
Fr. Joe loved New Melleray. As a novice he helped build the South Wing, completing the monastic quadrangle. He loved the land and planted more than 10,000 trees. To his last days he was devoted to the fruit trees in the garth.
Bauwens served the community he loved in many capacities. He also helped at the Assumption Abbey in Ava, Mo, where he was prior from 1957 till 1959, and later superior from 1967 to 1968. After studying in Rome between 1961 and 1963, he returned to New Melleray to be director of the junior professed and theology professor for the scholastics.
In the last decade of his life, Fr. Joe directed private retreats in at the Abbey's Guest House. He was one of the founders of the community's Associate Program. He had an ardent love of the Word of God and touched many people at a very deep level when he spoke to them about Lectio Divina. After fifty years of faithful service he was called to share in the reality of the faith he loved in this life.
