Gale F. BARTER, 79, East Orange, N.J., and formerly of New York City, N.Y., and Rochester, passed away Saturday at St. Vincent's Hospital, New York.
Born on Aug. 23, 1925, in Rochester, he was the son of Harry and Marie Barter. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor of science degree in architecture. He was a member of the Edward Frederick Sorin Society at Notre Dame.
Mr. Barter was an architect. He worked in the planning department of Copeland, Novak and Israel, New York, N.Y., and continued in that capacity when the firm joined Walker Group CNI, Manhattan, N.Y. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a volunteer since the 1980s at St. Vincent's Hospice, New York City, and head of the Community Garden at Harrison Park Towers, East Orange, N.J. He was an avid donator and supporter of the arts and many dance groups such as American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem and many others.
Survivors include his sister, Gloria Fellers Alber and husband Joe, Rochester; nieces, Susan and husband Jake Smith, Middletown, and Eileen Fellers, Rochester; great-nephews and great-niece, Brad Fellers, Indianapolis, Cory Fellers, Oregon, and Lori Jean Fellers, Rochester; and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harry C. Barter; and nephew, Stephen Fellers.
His funeral service is at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Church, East Orange, N.J. Visitation will be 2-4 p..m. and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Preston Funeral Home, South Orange, N.J. Burial and graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at IOOF Cemetery, Rochester, with the Rev. Joseph Jacob officiating. Memorials may be made to Harrison Park Towers Garden Club, East Orange, N.J., or St. Vincent's Hospice, New York, N.Y. Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester, is handling local arrangements. Memorials may be sent to the funeral home.
