Fifth of eight children born to Francis "Frank" Dukelow and Itilda Peterson, named for her mother's sister Bertha.

Before her 1916 marriage Bertha taught school for several years.

In 1930 Bertha's husband Andrew Lawrence had a tragic accident working with dynamite on his job - and she was left to raise Enid, Andrew Jr and on her own.
