Ernest R. "Pete" Jern, age 65, of Oquawka, Ill., passed away at 10:55 p.m., Thursday, September 30, 2010 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Ia.
He was born on November 27, 1944 in Burlington, Ia., the son of Phillip and Arlah Wingfield Jern. Pete was reared and educated in Oquawka and graduated from G & O High School in 1962. He served in the United States Army during Vietnam. Pete married Sharon Jo Darnell on May 3, 1969 in Monmouth, Ill., she survives. Pete first worked at OMC Gale Products in Galesburg, Ill. as a supervisor for 16 years. He then worked at Mach 1 Boats in Monmouth as a lamination supervisor. Pete also worked at Alexis Fire Equipment as a detailer and finisher. After retirement Pete worked part time as a janitor at the West Central Elementary School. Pete loved to spend time with his family especially his grandchildren. He was an avid football and sports fan. Pete was a Chicago Bears and Cubs fan. He enjoyed going for rides and sight seeing.
Surviving Pete is his wife Sharon Jern of Oquawka, Ill., two daughters; Barbara Scott (Rob) of Biggsville, Ill., Tricia Keever (Vannie) of Gladstone, Ill. Four grandchildren; Tyler Scott, Grace Scott, Jacob Keever, and Emma Keever. Also surviving are two brothers; Hal Jern (Betty) of Oquawka, Ill., Rick Jern (Priscella) of Colorado Springs, Co., two sisters; Rhonda Jern of Oquawka, Robin Tassin (Troy) of Oquawka, and one half brother Larry Jern of Stronghurst, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services: A funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 4, 2010 at the Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka, Ill. Interment with military honors will be in the Oquawka Cemetery. His family will be present to receive friends on Sunday from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. at Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka. A memorial fund has been established for West Central Elementary School.
