Ernst was born in Ruhnow, Pommern, Germany. He moved with his family to America, arriving in New York Apr 15, 1883 from Germany on the vessel Strassburg. He travelled with his son Herman William, daughters Emilie Augusta Henrietta Falk, Wilhelmina Caroline Ernestine Falk and Bertha Augusta Wilhelmina Falk. Herman was acting as the head of household by then. They joined an older brother Wilhelm Fridrich Herman Falk, who had arrived a year earlier and settled in LeMars IA.

Ernst is presumed to have a brother John, memorial 5468183, who came earlier and settled in Furley KS.

The family came to LeMars IA, and lived there for several years. They them moved to the area of Parkston SD and lived there for again a few years. About 1903 Herman packed up his family and his "stuff' and moved to Canada, south east of Edmonton AB. One reason they had come to the US in the first place was that in Germany they were unable to acquire land. Eventually the LeMars area became full and they moved west. Later the Parkston area became fully settled too. They then moved to Canada and acquired several farms. They family stayed in the same area in Canada for some years. In 1963, I, a great grandson of Ernst, moved to the US.
