ELIZABETH PHIPPS

NOW RESTS IN PEACE - PHIPPS
After an earthly pilgrimage of more than ninety years. Mrs. Elizabeth
Phipps passed into the life eternal at 1 o’clock this afternoon. The
final summons came to her at the family home, corner Marshal and 7th
streets, and was due to an illness dating back but two weeks. Previous
to that time decedent had been in excellent health, and the announcement
of the death will prove a shock to many who knew and loved her.
Mrs. Phipps has been a resident of the city nearly 50 years, living a
life of self-denial and sacrifice incident to home-making in a new
country and coming with the city to a position of affluence. She was
a native of England having been born there, January 24, 1810 and was
at the time of her death 90 years, 1 month and 14 days old. She was
married to William Phipps in her home country and in 1855, the couple
emigrated to the United States, taking up their residence here. Mr.
Phipps died 18 years ago and since that time deceased has resided in
the house where the summons to her higher life found her waiting.
During the two weeks of her illness she had been tenderly cared for and
everything that loving kindness and the most skilled science could
suggest was done to prolong life. But it was not to be life’s mission
and released from its earthly tenement, the spirit took its flight to
Him who gave it birth. Deceased was a woman who commanded the love and
respect of all with whom she came in contact. In the years of her
residence here she had won for herself a place in the hearts of a large
circle of friends and to these her death will cause sincere regret.
Hers was a generous nature, which reached out in helpfulness to any who
were in need of kindliness and uplifting; her life a golden example to
all who knew her. She was a member of the local Presbyterian church and
up to the time of her illness evinced an interest in its affairs. Seven
children survive to mourn the loss of a loving mother and while the
parting is sacredly sad, they cannot but feel that the aged mother now
rest peacefully. The children are: W.H. Phipps, Hudson; Jas. A. and
George, St. Paul, Charles, California; and Mesdames W. Robinson, F.
Richardson, of this city and Mrs. Ellen Wallace of California. Funeral
arrangements have not been completed, but the services will probably be
held Tuesday afternoon.

EARTHLY TIES SUNDERED
The last earthly ties save those of memory were sundered when at
2 o’clock this afternoon friends in large numbers gathered at the
Presbyterian church to pay a last tribute of love and respect to
the late deceased, Mrs. Elizabeth Phipps. Rev. O.H. Chapin, of
Milwaukee, conducted the services and spoke feelingly, eulogizing
the life that had been ended by the call of the death angel.
Appropriate music was rendered and a large funeral cortege followed
the remains to the final resting place in Evergreen.
