Mary Philomena "Phill" Blankley Hice, 84, of Miami, FL and Roswell, GA passed away September 29th at her Roswell, GA home. Phill was born in Akron, OH in 1926 and attended school in Millcreek, W.VA. She graduated from Strayer Business College. A life-long learner, Phill and her husband, Joseph Spurgeon Hice, USAF Lt. Col. (Ret.), a former jet-pilot, attended classes at Florida International University in Miami. Phill and Joe were married nearly 60 years. During World War II, Phill was a real life "Rosie the Riveter," and she worked on the PBY sub–chasing bomber for Glynn L. Martin in Baltimore. She also worked in the Pentagon as a secretary for five-star General Omar Bradley. In 1960, Phill earned an Outstanding Program award for the finest church youth program in the U.S. Military. The award was presented by Francis Cardinal Spellman. She was preceded in death by her mother, Genevieve Downs "Mimi" Blankley, who died in 2005. In addition to her husband Joe, Phill is remembered lovingly by her three children and six grandchildren: Joseph Spurgeon "Joe" Hice, Jr. (Sandra), Mary "Cassie" and Laurie; Charles Newton Hice (Sharon), Kenneth and Kathryn "Katy"; and Leslie Jane Hice Coleman (Darryl), Jenna and Kimberly Coleman. A memorial service was held 3:00 PM, Saturday, October 2, 2010 at SouthCare Cremation Society and Memorial Centers in Alpharetta, GA.
