Marvin "Monnie" C. Hanson, 87, of Underwood, died Tuesday,
Aug. 26, 2003, at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls.

He was born on Nov. 26, 1915, in Tordenskjold Township, rural Underwood, the son of H. Arnold and Adolphina (Halderson) Hanson. He grew up in rural Underwood where he was confirmed at Trefoldighed Lutheran Church and attended country school. Monnie worked as a hired hand for area farmers. On Feb. 10, 1942, he entered the United States Army, serving in Hawaii, Australia and the South Pacific theatre. After his honorable discharge on Sept. 3, 1945, he returned to the area and worked at Fergus Falls Monument Company.

On March 22, 1947, he married Leona Johansen. The couple lived in Underwood for 56 years, living at the Foss log home for the first 10 years, building a new home in 1958. Monnie worked at Service Oil in Underwood for almost 30 years. In his retirement years, he enjoyed working in his shop creating things, watching the Minnesota Twins, reading, bird watching, traveling and yard work. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Monnie was a member of Sverdrup Lutheran Church in Underwood. He served on the Underwood Fire Department for 21 years and served as its Chief for 19 years. He was also a life member of the American Legion, VFW Post 612, and the 24th Infantry (Taro Leaf) Division.

Preceding him in death were his parents; four brothers, Alfred, Herbert, Francis and Norris; and five sisters, Nora Stotts, Alida Lien, Emma Bakke, Neola Nelson and Hilma Halvorson.

Survivors include his wife, Leona; a son, Allen Hanson-Freed of Fergus Falls; two granddaughters, Tracy (Dave) Linton and Robyn Hanson; two great-grandsons, Jacob and Ryan Linton; two brothers,. Eddie (Viola) Hanson of Fergus Falls and Gordon (Thelma) Hanson of California; one sister Ruby Gronniningen of California; numerous nieces, nephews; and special friends, Donna Hanson and B.J. Pompe.

Visitation: Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home
Service: 2 p.m. Friday at Sverdrup Lutheran Church,
Underwood

Burial: Sverdrup Lutheran Cemetery, Underwood, with
military honors provided by the Underwood American Legion
