Robert Lee Sluder, age 90, of the Squirrel Creek Community, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 30, 2010 in Greeneville, TN. A native of Avery County, he was a son of the late Smith and Belle McKinney Sluder and the husband of 66 years to Bonnie Huffman Sluder. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Sluder and Hazel Greenfield. He was a World War II Army Veteran, having served for 5 years at the Schofield Barracks in Hawaii, where Pearl Harbor was attacked. Robert was the oldest living member of Chestnut Dale Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for over 63 years and Treasurer for over 50 years.
Surviving is his loving wife of 66 years, Bonnie Huffman Sluder; one son, Jimmy Sluder and wife, Joy, of Greeneville, TN; two sisters: Virgie Hampton of Johnson City, and Geraldine Hayden of Boones Creek, TN; five brothers: Harold Sluder and wife, Hazel, of Marion, Ronald Sluder and wife, Willa Mae, of Newland, Ray Sluder and wife, Sarah, of Macon, GA, Billy Sluder and wife, Pauline, of Gray, TN and Kenneth Sluder and wife, Helen, of Unicoi, TN; two grandchildren: Jimmy Sluder, II of Granby, CO and Brooke Carlyle and husband, Chris, of Wake Forrest; one great-grandson, Matthew Gregory Carlyle. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral Services will be held at 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 3rd, at Chestnut Dale Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 3 until 5 p.m. on Sunday prior to the services at the church. Military Graverites will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday from the Mountain Home Veterans National Cemetery in Johnson City.
