John Lynn Dodd, formerly of Wilburton, OK passed away Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at St. Edward's Hospital in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Mr. Dodd was born to the late Andrew Bee and Lucille Lydia (Wade) Dodd on October 9, 1935 in Wilburton, OK. He was raised in Wilburton and attended Lutie Elementary School and Panola High School. Mr. Dodd attended Eastern Oklahoma State College for two years and then transferred to the University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond, OK and graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. He met Ollie during his freshman year at Panola High School. They began dating during their Junior year. They graduated as co-valedictorians of their Class of 1953. They were married a year after graduation on August 6, 1954 in Wilburton. Mr. Dodd taught one semester in the Oklahoma City Public School System before going to work for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company. He worked as a switchman for 17 years. He worked 13 years as the Assistant Trainmaster at the General Motor's facility in Oklahoma City. He retired in December of 1990. John and Ollie were introduced to Hot Springs Village in 1980. They took "the tour" and liked what they saw. They purchased a lot and began making plans to retire there. Those dreams came true October 1991. John enjoyed working in his yard and around the neighborhood. One Christmas, he helped build frames to hold the small clear lights, which fit each window of the Garland County Courthouse. Two other men helped him with this project. He was a member of Christ of the Hills United Methodist Church. He is survived by two sisters, Peggy Hull of Chula Vista, CA and Dolores Anderson of Boise, ID.; brother, Bob Dodd and wife Bobbie Jo of Summerfield, OK; sister-in-law, Jimmie Dodd of Wilburton and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and other family and friends. John is preceded in death by his wife, Ollia Faye Dodd; parents Andrew Bee and Lucille Dodd; brother, Kenneth Dodd. Great nieces, Melissa and Melanie Willis were very special to him. At the age of three, Melissa and Melanie were allowed to spend spring break and vacations with John and Ollie. That continued until they were teenagers. They were like grandchildren to John and Ollie. He was always included in all their special occasions, including Melissa's wedding. He was their "other" grandpa. The Funeral Service will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Jones Harkins Funeral Home Chapel, Wilburton, OK with Rev. Mike Morey officiating. Interment will follow at Baldwin Cemetery, Cravens Community, Oklahoma. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Kenneth Jennings, Waylon Lewis, James Alford, Robert Jennings, Jerod Brown and Jason Brown. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Jones Harkins Funeral Home, Wilburton, OK.
