Margaret was the first of four children born to Joseph Alexander Thompson and Jennie Layburn Thompson. Rev. William Reid Sr. baptized Margaret 8/3/1872. Her parents separated when she was young. After high school, she attended Indiana State Normal (now Indiana University of Pennsylvania) in PA. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh (joined the congregation on 11/5/1892. There she met Will Reid (Jr.). She was usually president of the Women's Missionary Society and taught Sunday school classes regularly. She had several interests besides her family and the church. She loved to read, preferring detective stories with lots of action. Another hobby was her interest in the stock market.
