Catherine Mary McGrath, 89, a long-time school teacher, died May 3, 2002, of natural causes at Lake District Long-Term Care Facility in Lakeview.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Presbyterian Church in Lakeview. Inurnment will be at Lakeview I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Desert Rose Funeral Chapel, Lakeview, is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. McGrath was born Jan. 9, 1913, in Lakeview to Patrick and Bertha (Pendleton) Angland.
She was raised and educated in Lakeview and, after graduating from high school there, attended the University of Oregon on a Daly Fund Scholarship.
She received a lifetime teaching certificate from the university and returned to Lakeview, starting her teaching career at the Euwana Camp on Quartz Mountain, where she continued teaching for two years.
She met her first husband, Allen Hensen Sr., at a dance in Lakeview and they were married in 1936.
They lived in Susanville for about five years, but she moved back to Lakeview following his death in 1943. While in Susanville, she had been able to maintain a teaching position in Lakeview.
In 1948, she married her second husband, Martin McGrath.
She taught fourth grade at Arthur D. Hay Elementary School until retiring in 1977. On a leave of absence in the early 1960s, however, she earned her bachelor's degree in education from Southern Oregon University.
Mrs. McGrath was a past Lake County Roundup Queen and a member of Kappa Gamma Delta Sorority.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Gloria Hensen of Homer, Alaska; grandson and his wife, Jeremy and Caroline Hensen of Anchorage, Alaska; granddaughter and her fiance, Jody Hensen and Kyle Lingerfeldt of Clemson, S.C.; and cousin, Jack Pendleton of Lakeview.
She was preceded in death by both of her husbands; brother, John Angland; and son, Allen Hensen Jr. in 1989.
