The Waukegan News-Sun, Wednesday, April 2, 1952. Mrs. Smart, 89, taken by death. Lifelong Antioch Resident was taken by death. Lifelong Antioch Resident was daughter of Pioneer Lake County Family. Antioch--Mrs. Mary Smart, 89, lifelong resident of Antioch died at 6 AM, today in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Antoinette Fields following an illness of two weeks. Mrs. Smart was born July 31, 1862, on the farm on which she lived until five years ago when she moved to the home of her daughter. The farm was homesteaded by her parents, Frank and Addie Simmons, who came here from the east. The Smart farmhouse was built over 100 years ago and is still standing on its original location of Rte. 173 on the west village limits. The place has since been purchased by Bernard Haviland who lives there. Mrs. Smart had long been a member of St. Ignatius Episcopal Church here. Also surviving are three other daughters, Mrs. Emma Simons, Mrs. Gertrude Brook, and Mrs. Pauline Smith, all of Antioch; a son, Donald S. Smart of Waukegan; a sister, Mrs. Carrie Whitmore of San Francisco, California; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William, on Feb. 22, 1926, and a son, Robert L., in July, 1930. Services will be held at 2 PM Friday in the Strang Funeral Home, Antioch, with the Rev. Bruce Strange, rector of St. Ignatius Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Friends my call after 1 Pm tomorrow at the funeral home. The family requests that flowers be omitted.
