BESSIE TOVEY HENDRICKS

NYSSA- Bessie Tovey Hendricks, 90, passed away in Nyssa, Ore., Monday, Sept. 27, 2010.

Bessie was born Jan. 8, 1920, in Garland, Utah, to James Ralph Ashby and Elizabeth Tovey Ashby.

She was the 10th child in a family of 12 children.

She moved her family to Nyssa, Ore., in the early ‘30s where they cleared the sage brush and farmed.

Bessie completed her schooling in the Nyssa school systems.

She married Alma Wren Hendricks on June 27, 1939, in the Salt Lake City LDS temple.

They were blessed with three children Sherry, Jerald Alma and Deborah Kay.

Bessie was very industrious having learned this from her parents.

Her family was very important to her, she loved family gatherings, she especially liked it when everyone came to her home for holiday dinners.

She was extremely talented. She was a great cook and spent many hours making one of a kind wedding cakes.

She was also an excellent seamstress and in her later years took up oil painting for which she had a special talent.

Bessie and Alma moved to Vale in 1968, where she lived until moving to Nyssa Gardens in 2008.

She was a rural mail carrier in the Nyssa area for many years.

She was very active in the LDS Church serving in many organizations, always going the extra mile.

She especially enjoyed being a temple worker in the Boise Idaho Temple with Alma for 12 years.

She is survived by her children, Sherry Schoeneman (Ron), Nyssa, Ore., Jerald Alma Hendricks (Georgia), Redmond, Ore. and Deborah Kay Belnap (Jim), Vale Ore.; one brother, Chester Ashby, Quincy, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 10 brothers and sisters; and husband, Alma.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 1, 2010, at the Vale Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The family will meet with friends for one hour prior to the service at the same location beginning at 10 a.m.

Vault interment will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Rosedale Memorial Gardens.

The family wishes to thank Debbie Price and her staff and Heart & Home Hospice for their loving care and service to Bessie.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Haren-Wood Funeral Chapel.
