Kate Van Doren Holbrook, 85, of Roanoke, Va., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 28, 2010. She was born on September 15, 1925, to the late William Clark and Oakey Mae Kitterman Van Doren. Kate was graduated from Jefferson High School in 1943. She always wanted to be a nurse and earned her R.N. degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1946. Returning to Roanoke, she began work at Lewis Gale Hospital where, in addition to nursing, she taught pediatrics for four years.

She married William A. Holbrook on October 23, 1948. They resided in Roanoke, Waynesboro, Greensboro, and returned to Roanoke in 1965. Kate continued part-time nursing at Lewis Gale until she and her husband retired in 1985. The Holbrooks joined Covenant Presbyterian Church in 1965. She lived a gracious and exemplary Christian life and made many friends. After a brief illness, she died peacefully at home.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by five children and their spouses, Patricia Holbrook Daugherty and husband, Bobby, William Preston Holbrook and wife, Amy, Fred Asbury Holbrook and wife, Laura, Terrell Lee Holbrook and wife, Ann, and Clark Carter Holbrook and wife, Shari. Kate is also survived by nine grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren; and her beloved sister, Virginia C. Wright.

Visitation will be at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Ave. on Thursday, September 30, 2010, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A service celebrating her life will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, October 1, 2010, at Covenant Presbyterian Church. The Revs. Robert and Dusty Fiedler will officiate. A private graveside service will precede.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International, c/o Roanoke West Camp, P.O. Box 3329, Roanoke, Va. 24015 or the Covenant Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 1831 Deyerle Road, Roanoke, Va. 24018.
