Chester Horton Brent Jr., 63, of 10713 Farragut Hills Blvd., Knoxville, formerly of Greeneville, died Thursday morning in Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge after a period of declining health.

Born in Staunton, VA, he was the son of the late C.H. Brent Sr. and Ruth Moran Brent.

An electrical engineer, Mr. Brent held a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Cornell University and was retired from Phillips Consumer Electronics Corp., where he had worked for 32 years.

He was a retired major in the U.S. Army reserves and lived with his family in Greeneville until 1985, when he was transferred to Knoxville by Phillips.

The Brent family had been active members of St. James Episcopal Church in Greeneville. He served several terms as a member of the church vestry, and for a number of years held the post of church treasurer.

He was a member of Church of the Good Samaritan in Knoxville, the East Tennessee Personal Computer Users Group and the Knoxville Amateur Radio Club.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Burkhart Brent; two sons, James Brent of Oak Ridge and Craig Brent of Clinton; a daughter-in-law, Rebecca Brent; a granddaughter, Patricia Brent; grandson, Jonathan L. Brent (b. 4/27/1990) a sister, Sarah Brent; and an aunt (by marriage), Myrtice Burkhart of Heiskell.

A graveside service was held on Saturday, Dec. 23, 1989, at Sunset Cemetery in Clinton with the Rev. Ellis Mayfield officiating. A memorial service was held on Jan. 20, 1990 at St. James Episcopal Church in Greeneville.

Friends were encouraged to make memorial gifts to St. Jude Children's Hospital, the Church of the Good Samaritan or St. James Episcopal Church.

Arrangements were handled by Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton, TN.
