Maria Sophia Verdel was the daughter of Anthony Verdel (1755-1788), a native of Sigulan, Languedoc, France, who arrived in America from Brest, France, on April 30, 1779, as the band leader of the Marquis de Lafayette's marching troops, and who after he was discharged on December 26, 1782, he remained in America, where he married Edith Brewer (1765-1811), of Charlotte County, Virginia on December 28, 1784. In 1787, as an American Revolutionary War veteran, Verdel was awarded over 5,000 acres of bounty lands in Wilkes and Franklin County, Georgia. Maria had an older brother, John Anthony Verdel (1787-1879), but her father was murdered on 20 Apr 1788 before she was born.

Maria married James Levi Tate on January 14, 1813, in Elbert County, Georgia. They were the parents of ten children: Son Tate (1813-1813), Mary Frances Tate Pittman (1814- ), Sophia Elizabeth Tate Dickerson (1815-1855), Martha Mayfield Tate Haynes (1816-1862), Daughter Tate (1818-1818), Sarah Elizabeth Tate Spier (1819-1892),
James Tate (1822- ) Enos Minor Tate (1824- ), Zimouar Thomas Tate (1825-1890), and Linire Tate (1827- ).
