Albert was the son of Wesley Barnes and Mary Smith. Albert, as well as four of his brothers, served in the Civil War.

Albert first enlisted on 4 Aug 1862 as 1st Sergeant of Co. B 36th Iowa Infantry. He was discharged for disability on 7 May 1863 Helena, Arkansas. He was a resident of Mahaska County, Iowa, when he re-enlisted as a Private on 12 Jan 1864 at the age of 19. He mustered in Co F 4th Iowa Cavalry 12 Jan 1864. Mustered out 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia.

Albert married Elizabeth L Martin on 31 May 1874 in Wapello County. They had four known children: Harriet, Frank, Helen, and Alice.

Albert died at the age of 70 years 4 months.
