Dimple Oldine McKinnon (aka Dean, Mamaw or Mamo) was born April 5, 1924 in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, and moved to Heaven on May 15, 2021 from natural causes in Grandview, Texas.
She got off to a rough start when it was discovered that she had a milk allergy. After exhausting all usual options, a neighbor thought to bring over some mare's milk and it proved to be her life saver. She went on to lead a very healthy life. She reveled in being a daddy 's girl and she would proudly tell the story of the day her daddy brought her a baby bobcat! Being athletic she enjoyed playing baseball and basketball which were her favorite, especially when she could play with her daddy. When she wasn't playing with him her next favorite was to watch him play shortstop.
Tragically, her daddy passed-away in an auto accident when she was only 12. In 1936 this was a great hardship for a family of 4 children. Left alone to provide for the family, her mother moved them from Bonham, Texas to Kirby, Arkansas where Dean chopped cotton and did any chore that was needed.
A few years later she met a handsome young man whose name was Ulyess McKinnon. When asked about their first meeting she said that he rode a very nice horse. He began to court her and their first date was on Mother's Day where they went to the annual cleaning of the cemetery. He later convinced her to marry him and they tied the knot in September of 1939.
They began their family in Kirby Arkansas when their first daughter, Doris, was born in 1941. Their second daughter, Dean was on her way when he was drafted into the Army for World War II. Dean was born in 1943. While Ulyess went to war, Dean raised chickens and sold eggs and fryers to make ends meet. After the war ended, they moved to Dallas, Texas where she was a homemaker and he worked for Johnson & Johnson. Early in the 1950's they moved to Wichita Falls and went in partnership with her Uncle Rip Ravan on a grocery store. Not long afterwards they were able to buy out her Uncle Rip and the store was named Mac's Grocery. He was the butcher, running the meat market and she was the cashier running the front end. They became known in community as Mac and Mrs. Mac.
She enjoyed driving her girls to all the social events of the time. After Mac's third heart attack in 1973 they retired. Retirement didn't sit well with her so she went to work for Gibson's department store for several years. It was during this time, in 1981, that Mac went to be with the Lord. Never one to be idle for long she went to work for JC Penny then Dillard's. She was a devout Christian and known to pray a lot. She always loved having her children and grandchildren around. Every Sunday she cooked a pot roast for everyone who could come. All her grandchildren would love to spend the night and look forward to a morning breakfast of biscuits with chocolate gravy. She was always known to be very outspoken, fiercely independent and tough. Tougher than most; it's easy to see why she was part of the greatest generation.
Many years later her youngest daughter, also nicknamed Dean, convinced her to move in with her in Grandview Texas. Shortly afterwards Dean went to be with the Lord. Then September 2017 her oldest daughter, Doris, also passed-on to heaven, leaving her the sole survivor of her immediate family. Always miss-independent, she bought a home in Maypearl, Texas. After breaking her hip (the first bone she ever broke) she moved in to the Grandview rehabilitation and nursing home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Millard & Ella (Ravan) Turner, her younger brothers Furman and Bobby Turner, husband, Mac, a granddaughter, Joy Skelton, and both of her daughters, Doris Skelton (wife of Leon Skelton) and Dean Tally (wife of Ted Tally).
She is survived by grandchildren Troy Tally (Lisa) – Hendersonville, NC. David Skelton (Sheila) – Waxahachie, Wendy Skelton-Wiltsey (Robert) – Sanger, LaDena Skelton – Wichita Falls, Larry Tally (Tracy) – Maypearl, Kandie Tally (Michael Gilbert) – Grandview, Rebecca Skelton-Stuart (Rob) – Duncan, OK, Matthew Skelton – Wichita Falls, and 1 older sister, Geraldine (Arkansas) and 8 great nieces and nephew
Her legacy continues on with her surviving 23 great-grandchildren and 26 great-great grandchildren.
Oldine (Dean) McKinnon, 97 spunky years of a full, beautiful, well-lived life.
