MENARD — Louise Leggett died of cancer in Emory, Texas, on April 29th, 2006, at the age of 93.

The daughter of Era and Guenther Kiehne, she was born in Corsicana, Texas, in 1913. After spending her younger years in Dallas, her family moved to Menard, Texas, where she graduated from Menard High School in 1930.

She attended Abilene Christian College before returning to Menard to teach third grade. She married M.S. "Toogy" Leggett in 1933 and became a homemaker.

Louise was a former PTA president and a member of the El Progresso Club and the Episcopal Church Women. She lived by the motto, "Seize the day!" All who knew her admired her independent spirit and incredible work ethic. She was a talented artist. Those who received a hand-painted notecard from Louise would often frame it for display. Working in her large garden every day was a joy for her, and she freely shared its bounty with friends and family. The written word was Louise's greatest passion. She was an avid writer and a reader of all genres, with a special love of poetry. Her repertoire of memorized poems was unparalleled, and she enjoyed reciting poetry for audiences on any occasion.

She is survived by two children, Gloria Little and husband John, and Curtis Leggett and wife Margo; five grandchildren, Liza Leggett, Heather Bryant, Lendy Jones, Carla Berg and David Leggett; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Sue Leggett, who died at birth; her husband, Toogy, who died in 1973; and one grandson, Curtis Bryant.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 5, at the Menard Calvary Episcopal Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Menard Calvary Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 863, Menard, TX 76859, or to the Menard Public Library, P.O. Box 404, Menard, TX 76859.
