Howard Nelson Onan was the son of Frank and Hattie Onan. He attended schools in Stevens Point and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He entered the U.S. Army in June 1941, and served in field artillery during World War II. He was discharged as a master sergeant in December 1945. He was married to Ruth Alm on September 29, 1943. When they first started farming Howard worked for a time as a milk hauler and trucked animals. Gradually they acquired pure bred cows and built a sizable dairy herd. Besides farming Howard has been active for many years on the Portage County Holstein Council, has been a supervisor for the township of New Hope, and, both he and his wife, were active in church activities and 4-H. They had five children: Marilyn, Kathleen, Dean, Paul, and Dale.
