OBIT A.J. Smothers, Once Prominent Citizen of Lavaca County Died this Morning -Cause Unknown.
Wednesday, May 16, 1900-A.J. Smothers, Once Prominent Citizen of Lavaca County Died this Morning - Cause Unknown.
The lifeless body of her husband, stretched upon a quilt upon the floor, was the sight that greeted Mrs. A.J. Smothers this morning then she peered into the barn at the rear of the family premise opposite the City cemetery. An alarm was sounded and within a few minutes the sad news had reached the ears of many of the unfortunate man's friends and they repaired to the scene. Justice Green was also notified and in company of Dr. J.J. Fonts viewed the remains for the purpose of holding an inquest. The cause of Mr. Smother's death has not been ascertained up to the hour of going to press. However, the following facts were ascertained; Mr. Smothers left the house this morning stating to his wife that he wished to lie down in the barn, where the flies were not so numerous as they were in the house, and where he could take a nap undisturbed. This was at 7:00 o'clock. Mrs. Smothers paid no further attention to him until she visited the barn at about 10:30 o'clock, only to be horrified beyond measure at the sight of the lifeless body of her husband stretched out upon the floor of the dingy little barn. He had apparently been dead for some time, and was lying face down when found.Mr. Smothers had been a resident of this city for little more that a year, coming from Lavaca Co. where he was prominent in county politics for many years. For fourteen years he was sheriff of his home county, esteemed and respected by al. Those of his acquaintance here who have know him long say that he was a good man, and certain it is that during his brief residence in this city he won many friends, who, with The Inquirer, deeply sympathize with the wife and children in their bereavement.Funeral arrangements have not yet been made, although it is likely that the remains will be carried to Hallettsville for burial tomorrow.

Shiner Gazette, 23 May 1906, page 1, Halletsville News column-The remains of A. J. Smothers, who died in Gonzales, were this afternoon laid to rest in the city cemetery here. Mr. Smothers was for some years sheriff of Lavaca county and later city marshall of of [sic] Halletsville, moving from here to Gonzales.

Weimar Mercury, May 26, 1906, page 6-Later developments in the death of A. J. Smothers, whose remains were found in a barn in the rear of his residence yesterday, point strongly to suicide. While Judge W. B. Green has not yet concluded holding the inquest the verdict, the Inquirer is informed, will be substantually as follows: "Deceased came to his death by a dose of strychnine self administered." This verdict was brought about partly by the fact that a bottle containing some strychnine was found in a stove in the barn near the body of the dead man.The remains were carried to Halletsville today for interment. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Smothers and Mr. John Smothers, of Page. — Gonzales Inquirer.
