"Irv" Irvin Doyle Wanlass, 79, of Blackfoot passed away Thursday, July 22, 2010, at his home.
Irvin was born January 24, 1931, to Reuben Wanlass and Clennie Cover Wanlass in Chapin, Idaho. He received his education in a one-room schoolhouse in Chapin.
Irvin served his country in the Korean Conflict as an Air Force airman first class. He was a flight engineer on the B-29s and part of the Air Rescue squadron. He was first stationed in San Antonio, Texas for training then was stationed in Japan where he served in the Pacific Theater and Guam.
On May 18, 1954, Irvin married Joy Butler in Idaho Falls. Together they had two daughters, Sheri and Susie. Irvin and Joy moved to Blackfoot in 1955 and have lived there ever since. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a strong testimony of the Gospel.
When first married, Irv leased a service station at Pond's Lodge in Island Park. Later he worked as a ranch hand in May and as a well driller for many years, both for himself and for Doug Cushman's Well Drilling. He ran his own pump business and worked at Blackfoot School District No. 55 as the Superintendent of Maintenance, New Construction and Quality Control. He also worked in maintenance at Bingham Memorial Hospital.
In his free time through the years he enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting and spending time with his family.
He was a member of the Snowmobiling Club, Cedar Hills Gun Club, lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and the Blackfoot River Bowman Archery Club. He was very skilled at making his own traditional bows, arrows and arrowheads and other primitive art. He was an excellent marksman with guns and bows and in later years grew the most wonderful gardens.
Irvin is survived by his wife, Joy of Blackfoot; daughters, Sheri Lynn Wanlass of Firth and Susie (Richard) Stocking of Groveland; sister, Bonnie Ellis of Idaho Falls; grandchildren, Brock Wanlass, Claire Stocking and Logan Stocking; and great-grandson, Dominic Wanlass.
