Dickenson man killed at blasting site
BLACKWOOD, VA - A young dickenson County resident was killed and another man seriously injured when they were struck by flying debris following an explosion at a strip mine. The accident, which took place Monday afternoon, left Garland Farrel Anderson, age 27, dead and Cruce Davis of Coeburn, Va., seriously injured.
A Ring Enterprises strip mine was the location of the accident. The blast which hurled the debris, reportedly took place about 1/4-mile from where Anderson and Davis were in a pickup truck. The two men, according to sources, were apparently driving way from the mine site when the blast occurred.
Anderson was declared dead on arrival at Norton Community Hospital where he was reportedly taken by the Norton Rescue Squad. Davis received treatment at the hospital and was then transferred to Holston Valley Community Hospital in Kingsport, Tennessee.
The two men according to reports, where struck in the head by flying rock which shattered the windows of the pickup truck. Other enployees were leaving the mine at the time, but apparently none were hit.
According to sources, the other workers went to aid Anderson and Davis immediately. A detailed investigation of the accident will be conducted by the Virginia Division of Mines.
It is thought that it is usual for blasting to take place at strip mines at the end of the shift. No reason has been disclosed, if one has been discovered, for the rock to have been thrown so far by the blast.
Anderson is survived by his wife, Tammy Lynn Anderson; three daughters, Amanda Anderson, Chrisity Anderson and Chasatity Anderson; his mother, Mrs. Nina Anderson, Clintwood, Va.; four brotherS, Ronnie Anderson, Manassas, Va., Eugene Anderson, Daris Anderson and Danny Anderson, all of Clintwood, Va.; three sisters, Patricia Brockhoff, Rebecca Anderson and Carolyn Anderson, all of Clintwood, Va.; his maternal grandparents, REV. and Mrs. Goble Rose, Clinchco, Va.,; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p. m., Thursday at the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel with REV. Terry Price officiating. Burial was in Phipps Memorial Cemetery in Clintwood, Va., with Clintwood Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Bryan Ison, Jack Murphy, Jennice Wayne Powers, Danny Powers, Danny Yates, Frank Funk, and Charlie Graham.
