Jesse Winston "Buddy" Price was born 06 August 1928 at the family home in Toomsuba, Lauderdale County, MS, the same home in which his father had been born 25 years earlier.
Buddy was delivered by Dr. James Shamburger of Toomsuba and assisted by Dr. William Jefferson Anderson, Sr. of Meridian. Dr. Anderson rode the train from Meridian to Toomsuba to assist Dr. Shamburger with a difficult labor and delivery.
Buddy was the second born child of Leander Lafayette Price and Laura Bell Thompson Price. He had an older sister Annie Laura "Bebe" Price, who married James Everett Wright.
Buddy attended Dixie Highway School in Toomsuba, Hunt Chamberlain Academy and Gulf Coast Military Academy at Gulf Port, MS.
On February 03, 1944 he deserted GCMA, rode a bus to New Orleans, LA and enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 15, using forged parents signatures.
He was sent to Boot Camp at San Diego, California. Following completion of Boot Camp Class #44-84, he was sent to board the U.S.S. Fanshaw Bay, CVE 70, called by her crew the "Fighting Fanny Bee".
He participated in the South Pacific Campaign of World War II. He was in the Battles of Saipan, Morati and Hallamahara, earning two Battle Stars.
While aboard the Fanshaw Bay the ship's crew was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation.
Just before the great battle of Leyte Gulf, it was discovered by authorities that Buddy was underage and was sent back to the States aboard the troop carrier USS General W.F. Hase (YBI) in San Francisco Bay on 08 November 1944.
He went to Pascagoula, MS to join his Mother and sister Bebe who were living there. He worked on tug boats at Pascagoula, MS and at Jacksonville, FL.
The family returned to Toomsuba and Buddy re-entered Dixie Highway High School in the Fall and attended two years. Though he did not graduate with his class he was awarded his High School dilploma at a later date.
Then in June 1947 he reenlisted in the U.S. Navy. Was stationed at NAS Orote, Guam and from there was sent aboard the U.S.S. Rendova, CVE 114 at San Diego, CA and departed on a World Cruise. Was in China for about 6 months.
He came home on leave and married Emma Lou Burt on 03 August 1949 in Meridian, MS.
Upon returning to duty, he was transferred to the U.S.S. Boxer, CV 21.
Emma Lou Joined him at Alameda, California in November of that year. On 25 January 1950 he was honorably discharged at Treasure Island, California.
He farmed and attended Farm Training School at Dixie Highway on the G.I. Bill.
Buddy soon discovered farming was not what he wanted to spend his life doing.
He worked at Grapette Bottling Company for a short period and was called up to active duty in the U.S. Naval Reserve to serve during the Korean Crisis. He was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Healy, DD672 for sixteen months. Made several trips in and out of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Puerto Rico.
From this tour he was honorably discharged 22 December 1952. He went to work at Plant Sweatt (Generating Plant), Mississippi Power Company on 16 January, 1953 as an Auxiliary Operator and retired from there 15 December 1988 as Supervisor, Plant Operations, with 35 years, 11 months of service.
Buddy and Emma Lou were greatly blessed with 22 years of
retirement before his death.
He loved to hunt and fish, was skilled in many areas, such as plumbing, elecrical, and carpentry. He called himself
a "jack of all trades", but "master of none". He always had some type of project going.
Buddy and Emma Lou were the parents of three children, Jesse Alan Price who married 1. Jewel Faith Bryan; 2. Janet Anderson Sullivan; Jeffrey Burt Price who married
Sara Janice Wright and Lu Ann Price who married Toby Frey.
They had 8 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren whom he adored.
