Taken from Inscriptions from Augusta Stone Church (oldest cemetery), Ft. Defiance, Augusta Co., Virginia, by Mrs. C. F. Rudolph, Washington, DC., 1953.

Daughter of Alexander Walker and wife of Thomas P. Crawford.

According to Wm W. Hooke's History & Remembrances found in Wayland's Virginia Valley Records, Sarah and Thomas had one child. Sarah lived but a few weeks and died. She is buried next to her grandparents in the oldest part of Augusta Stone Church Cemetery behind the Manse. The child, Sarah Agnes born in 1846, died in Oct 1849 and is probably buried next to her mother but many gravestones are missing in the older section of the graveyard. Thomas is not listed among the gravestones in the older or newer section of the Cemetery. Her gravestone reads, in part,: "She sought that peace which Heaven alone can give; And learned to die 'ere others sought to live."
