GROOM - Jack Harris Barnett, 78, died Saturday, March 21, 2009.

Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today in Immaculate Heart of Mary with the Rev. Raj Samala of the church as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St., in Amarillo.

Jack was born Aug. 30, 1930, in Groom. Jack graduated from Groom High School in 1949 and served two years in the U.S. Army before returning to Groom, where he farmed for many years and retired from the city of Groom.

Jack married Willie Mae Britten on June 20, 1952. Jack and Willie had a wonderful life and a blessed of marriage of 56 years, celebrated with five children: Sharon Britten and Shelley Britten, both of Groom, Schellon Major of The Woodlands, Jackie Barnett of Waurika, Okla., and Suni Morton of Lubbock.
Jack loved to ride his horses and the spirit that was present in the rodeo arena. In his later years, Jack enjoyed solving all of the world's problems with his buddies over a cup of coffee at the Stop N Shop. Grand "Pa" was passionate about watching, coaching and working with his children and his grandchildren in all of the athletic and extracurricular activities they were involved in.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, LaVesta Barnett, Verna Bell Elliot and Veona Davis.
Survivors include his wife, Willie Mae Barnett; five children; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Charlene Weller of Groom.
The family suggests memorials be to Odyssey Healthcare, 6900 W. Interstate 40, Suite 150, Amarillo, TX 79106; or Groom Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 111, Groom, TX 79039.
