Private First Class Floyd Gerald Smart, of the U.S. Air Corps, 19 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Willie E. Smart of South Winnfield, died near Yuma, Arizona, about 1:30 a.m., April 2, as the result of injuries sustained in an auto accident 74 miles east of Yuma, late Friday night.
Military funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Winnfield First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Alwin Stokes and Rev. Fred Flurry [missing] of the Veterans of Foreign Wars served as pallbearers. Burial was in the Winnfield Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home. Prior to the funeral the remains laid in state at the family residence after arriving here accompanied by a military escort Wednesday.
Surviving in addition to his parents are two brothers, Oliver and Raymond Smart of South Winnfield, and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Minnie King of South Winnfield.
Gerald was born in Winnfield May 21, 1929 and attended the Winnfield schools until a short time before entering the Air Corps on April 19, 1948. After completing basic training he spent several weeks in an Army hospital and was
transferred to the USAF Technical School in Ft. Francis E. Warren, Wyoming, where he received training as an electrician. Gerald completed the course a short time ago and was recently sent to a new base at Dateland, Arizona.
Complete details of the auto accident in which he lost his life were unavailable. It was reported that Gerald and an unidentified soldier friend were enroute to their base in an auto when the accident occurred about 11:50 p.m. April 1. The other youth was seriously injured but will recover.
Pallbearers were Herbert Harrison, H. W. Bass, Eli Harrell, Marvin Harrell, William Fuller, Laurie Mercer, James Watts, and Clinton W. Allen.
