Sep 20, 1935 – L. D. Meeker Dies From Car Accident
L. D. Meeker 48, farmer of Lunenburg, died early Monday morning in the Mt. Pleasant hospital as a result of losing his right leg below the knee in an automobile accident one mile below Stella on Highway 69 Friday night. Meeker was riding on the rear of the flour truck being driven by Theodore Adkisson. The truck met another truck loaded with stave bolts, the later truck striking Meeker's leg. Meeker requested his Adkisson to stop as he believed his leg was broken. On examination it was found that the leg had been severed and dropped on the highway 50 yards behind.
He was taken immediately to the Mt. Pleasant hospital where his injuries were cared for by Dr. M. R. Dzierva. Several blood transfusions were administered in a vain effort to save his life. Dr. Dzierva and the nurses stated that the shock of the crash had also brought about internal injuries.
Deceased is survived by his wife, four small children, his parents, Mr and Mrs J. E. Meeker of Lunenburg and four sisters, Mrs Maude Marchant of Lunenburg and Mrs Joe Turnbull, Mrs Steve Bone and Mrs Henry Johnson all of Melbourne. Burial was at the Combs Cemetery Monday afternoon, Eld. G. W. Howard, Rev. Chas. Franks and Rev. R. J. Rimer conducting the services.
