Mr. Newell, 86, died June 11, 2002, at Country Brook Living Center. He was born in Lincoln County on Sept. 6, 1915, to A. C. Newell Sr. and Haley Newell Newell.
He was a retired heavy equipment operator. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife, Marguerite Walker Newell; two grandchildren and five sisters.
Survivors are his wife, Wessie S. Newell of Brookhaven; his son, Jerome Newell of Lawrence County; his stepson, Jackie Walker of Columbus; his daughters, Peggy Rutland of Lawrence County and Earline Allen of Wesson; his stepdaughter, Gail White of Brookhaven; his brother, A. C. Newell of Brookhaven; his sister, Ruby Lee Britt of Brookhaven; and eight grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.
