Sam Blackshear is the son of Edward Pinkney Blackshear and Nettie Catherine Melton. He is the brother of Jesse Thomas Blackshear and Nora Bell Blackshear. Sam, along with his brother and sister, was orphaned in 1895-1896 when their mother died first and then, Edward Pinkney Blackshear died on the trail while returning from Oklahoma to Arkansas. Sam's father's live stock got loose and he chased them in the rain while having measles. Sam and his brother and sister were given to different family relatives. Sam went to a "Melton" family in Arkansas,a relative on his mother's side, Jesse went to Frances Blackshear Carr (an aunt on his father's side) and Nora was given to a family in Oklahoma. They found one another some time before 1908. Sam married Minerva Ann Dewitt (b. 15 Feb 1892 in Tucker, Oklahoma & d. 03 Jan 1979, bur. Walnut Ridge, Ark.) Sam and Minerva had sixteen children. They lived near Alicia and Hoxie Arkansas.
