Martha was raised in Springfield, Mass as a ward of the Solomon Hatch family. Her father Thomas May was originally from the Boston area and knew Solomon Hatch; he had moved to Richmond, Virginia where he married and where Martha was born. Thomas and his wife became terminally ill and asked that the Hatch family take care of Martha, according to letters of John B Hatch and recollections of Anna Sise Feeley Voigt (Oct 2007). Martha later moved to Rock Hill at Medford with the family of Solomon Hatch's son John B Hatch (seven years her senior). When Martha died at the age of 23, she was buried in John B Hatch's family cemetery at Rock Hill; all remains in this cemetery were moved to Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford in 1885.
