Helen C. Endorf was the first of 9 children born to Frederick William "Fred" Endorf Jr. and Helena Margarethe "Lena" Schafer. Her father had finished a business course at a school in Burlington, Iowa and was working in the offices of a furniture business when Helen was born. Her parents then moved to Wilcox, Nebraska where her father was a partner in a furniture dealership. Around 1915 the Endorf's made their last move, to Campbell (Franklin County), Nebraska. Helen graduated from Campbell High School in 1923 and taught public schools in Franklin County District No. 38 for two years. On 3 Jun 1925 she married Rudolph DIetrich August Henkel, and they settled on the Henkel family homestead in Catherton precinct of Webster County, Nebraska (just a few miles from Campbell).

They had four children, three of whom grew to adulthood:
Glenn Gordon, who married Marilyn Glee Burling;
An infant boy who was born and died on 12 May 1928;
Winston F, who married Lavona Seeman; and
Gayle Isabelle, who married Charles Maxwell Berg.

Helen's husband died in a tragic car accident on 17 Dec 1958; Helen lived the remainder of her life in Campbell, dying at the age of 92. At the time of her death, her sons were living in Campbell and her daughter in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
