Norman, the son of Chester D. Napierata and Sally B. Napierata of Dudley MA, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on November 5, 1964 in Boston MA. He arrived in Vietnam and was assigned to Company M, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

While on patrol in the vicinity of the Tan Phuoc village complex in Binh Son District the Marines received some enemy small arms sniper fire. Pursuing to engage the VC sniper LCpl Napierata tripped a BT (Booby Trap), the explosion killed the Marine as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds from the hostile device.
