1st Sgt. Morton, first enlisted in Ohio, on July 17, 1911. After service with the 80th Coast Artillery Corps, he was honorably discharged on July 16, 1914. He reenlisted with Troop C of the 8th Cavalry and served throughout World War I, until honorably discharged in June 1919, while stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. He was awarded the Mexican Border Service medal and the World War I Victory medal.
