David M. Abernethy, a former Charlotte mayor, died in a hospital Friday after a long illness. He was 87.
Abernethy was appointed mayor by the City Council on April 1, 1926, after the resignation of Mayor Harvey Moore.
The term expired May 4, 1927, and Abernethy did not seek election.
He had held several city and county posts and served four terms as chairman of the Mecklenburg County Tax Commission.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Harry and Bryant Chapel in the Oaks with burial in Elmwood cemetery.
Survivors are two daughters, Miss Myrtle Abernethy and Mrs. A. T. Dozier of Charlotte, and a half-brother, M. M. Harris of Charlotte.
