Mary Ellen was the daughter of Rev Simon P Fulton and his wife, Susanna Shaffer. She was born on November 9, 1856 in Saltlick Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Mary Ellen was one of ten children in the family. She had five sisters and three brothers. The last child has not been identified yet.
On New Year's day, 1876, Mary Ellen married James Lindley Freed, the son of Peter Freed and his wife, Sarah Stouffer or Stauffer. They had one son, William Sanford, born in 1878. Their other children were daughters Eva Lena, born in 1888; Hattie, born in about 1899 and Sadie, born in about 1906.
Mary Ellen passed away on April 5, 1925. She was buried in Mount Olive Cemetery.
