James (Jim) M. Durrett
March 6,1913 - Dec. 24,2004
Jim M. Durrett, 91, of Farmington passed away Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, in Farmington. James was born on March 6, 1913, in Oklahoma, but moved with his family to New Mexico in 1915.
He met and married the love of his life, Dorothy M. Rainwater in Tucumcari in 1934. They celebrated their 70th anniversary in 2004.
Jim served New Mexico and his country as a law enforcement officer for over 21 years.
He began his career as a policeman in Tucumcari, and left to be a State Policeman, returning to Tucumcari to be the Chief of Police. When World War II began, he became a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation assigned mostly in New Mexico and Texas. He was selected twice to be an instructor for the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Training Academy at Quantico, Va. In 1950, he elected, as his "office of choice" to be
assigned as the Special Agent in Charge for the Farmington Area.
Upon retirement from the F.B.I., he continued his involvement with the Farmington community by opening the Jim Durrett Real Estate Agency, serving as a County Commissioner and as a member of the Eastside Church of Christ.
He was a member of Animas Lodge No. 15, member of the Farmington York Rite Bodies, and a life-time member of the Ballat Abyad Shrine.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy Durrett; his son, James M. Durrett, Jr. and. Wife Norma; and his daughter, Leonora Durrett. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many
nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 12 brothers and sisters.
Services for James will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004; at Eastside Church of Christ, 2012 Huntzinger Ave., Farmington, with J.B. Harrington officiating. Interment will be at Memory Gardens with the Masonic doing the graveside services.
