Biography of Jethro Sumner O'Sheal aka Jethro O'Shields by David Travillion Bunton
Jethro Osheal aka O'Sheal, O'Sheals, and O'Shields was the son of Daniel Osheal and Sarah Walker. Jethro O'Sheal served in the Revolutionary War as a private under General Morgan and fought at Cowpens. Jethro was born 4 July 1763 and his name was written Jethro Sumner O'Sheal (written in the handwriting of his father Daniel Pugh O'Sheal) and verified by David Travillion Bunton. The top entry on the Bible page was written Daniel Pugh Osheal son of David Osheal and Elizabeth Pugh. A descendant born in the 1700s stated that Daniel Pugh Osheal was named after his maternal grandfather Daniel Pugh of Nansemond County, Virginia.

Jethro was married twice, and by his first wife Elizabeth (her maiden name was NOT Wooten) he was the father of Elizabeth Apsley Osheal, wife of Rev James Hewitt, both who removed to Gordon County, Georgia. According to family records as well as the records of Friendship Baptist Church and their compiler Judy McHam Davis, Jethro's (second) wife listed in the minutes was named Sarah O'Shields and that she separated from her husband.

Elizabeth (maiden name NOT Wooten) was the wife of the Revolutionary War soldier Jethro O'Sheal. Her name in some family records also appears to have been Elizabeth Catherine O'Sheal. The Friendship Baptist Church records show that Jethro Oshields was received by experience and baptism on Saturday before the first Lords day in August 1803...and the records further state, "In church conference Sat before the first Lords day in October 1804...Elizabeth Oshields by experience and baptism." Authorities of the church record and family history have identified this Elizabeth as Jethro's wife, and it is further supported by the name Elizabeth O'Sheal appearing in court records which infer by the testimonies that Elizabeth O'Sheal is the wife of Jethro. Family records also state that Elizabeth Osheal Hewitt was the daughter of Jethro Osheal and his wife Elizabeth. The DAR has accepted Jethro Oshields as a patriot of the Revolution and his daughter Elizabeth Osheal, wife of Rev James Allen Hewitt.
The surname had several variant spellings including O'Sheals, Osheal, O'Shealds, O'Shiel, and of course Jethro O'Shields. It is known that Elizabeth was the mother of Jethro's children. No children are known to be born to Sarah O'Shields who was his second wife. It was Sarah O'Shields, who in 1840 the church record stated that she had left her husband J Oshields, and asked to be separated from him. In the Oct 1841 minutes of the Friendship Baptist Church Records, Bro. James Huatte (ie James Hewett, James Hewitt, James Huate, etc) granted Sarah O'Shields a letter of dismission from the church. It is clear that it was the Sarah O'Shields who was the wife of Jethro or J O'Shields (with records pointing back to Jethro) according to Judy McHam Davis, the compiler of the records and an O'Shields descendant of Jethro's brother John O'Shields who married Lucretia Pascal. At the same meeting when Sarah O'Shields was granted a letter of dismission (because she had separated from her husband Jethro O'Shields), Rev James Hewitt and his brother-in-law Henry O'Shields were nominated to be delegates to the Baptist association representing Friendship Baptist Church. It should be noted that Henry O'Shields aka Henry Osheal was a member in good standing to be asked to be a delegate and represent their church; Henry's wife was also named Sarah, not to be confused with Henry's step-mother Sarah O'Shields. Henry and his wife Sarah O'Shields left SC in the 1840s, selling their farm with wife Sarah signing away her dower rights and removed to Texas with their younger children. Texas records document Henry's estate going to his widow Sarah and their children.

An incorrect reference for Jethro O'Shields is the History of Walnut Grove, which lists a connection in error, that his daughter Elizabeth married Tyree Harrison, when in fact it was his niece. The correct information is that Jethro and Elizabeth O'Sheal's daughter Elizabeth married Rev. James Hewitt. Some past researchers have tried to connect Jethro O'Shields with the a wife named Lucretia, however, the name Lucretia Wooten O'Shields is a fictional name, derived from Lucretia (name of bro John's wife) and Wooten (the father of several of the children of Teresa O'Sheal who was the mother of Elizabeth O'Sheals alias Wooten, wife of Tyree Harrison. Teresa O'Sheal or O'Shields was also the mother of Samuel O'Shields and Wiley O'Shields both who went to Lumpkin County, GA during the gold rush. Another daughter of Teresa "Tracy" or Teasy O'Shields was Nancy OShields who was the mother of one Wiley Drayton O'Shields).

A History of Walnut Grove gives incorrect information on Jethro O'Shields, aka Osheal, O'Sheal, etc.

(NOTE the fictional personage Lucretia Wooten was not the wife of Jethro)

info on his burial comes from a plat of O'Shields interments by informant of 19th century.

Jethro O'Shields first born son was the aforementioned Henry O'Shields, and the next son born was Daniel O'Shields born ca 1792 whose wife was name Mary. Younger sons were Jethro O'Shields Jr born ca 1800 and John O'Shields born ca 1805. He was known as John O'Shields JR to differentiate him from his uncle John Walker Osheal aka Oshields (brother of Jethro). John O'Sheal JUNIOR also known as John O'Shields JR married Charlotte Harrison who was the daughter of his first cousin Elizabeth Osheal alias Wooten Harrison and Tyrie Harrison. As a side note, the son of John Osheal SR born 1760 did have a son named John and this son John O'Shields removed to Jackson County, Georgia very early.
